Just ripped up the old carpet and we don't want to / can't resand the floor so we wanted to paint it. What type of paint should we use or should it be a stain? It is a hallway about 20 feet long and 3 feet wide.

Please advise.

Your still going to have to sand it to get the paint to stick. Or had you not thought of that.

Paint is just a finish, with pigment. it takes all the same steps as a clear finish to do it right and not have it peel up within a few months.
