I am planning to replace an old fiberglass tub/surround unit in my bathroom with a tub and surrounding tile. However, when I just measured my bathroom walls, the length from wall to wall was only 58 1/4 inches, not the 60 inch standard bathtubs that I have been seeing.
My question is that when it says rough opening of 60 inches for a bathtub (like at lowes), does that mean that I likely have 60 inches there for the rough opening, but the drywall has just cut into that making the measured dry wall to dry wall only 58 1/4 inches, or do i have to find a bathtub that is only 58inches.
Thanks much
Bryan

Tubs are measured to the studs. There is a flange on the tub that the tile will go over and the flange keeps the water from leaking into the wall.Good luck.

Thanks much. How can I measure stud to stud, or since it is 58 1/4 does that likely mean that it is 60 inches from stud to stud.

Well your drywall is probably 1/2 inch, so that gets you pretty close to 60 inches from stud to stud. What's on the drywall? Tile? Tub surround? Given the measurements you stated, I bet you have a 60 inch stud to stud situation, which is good.
