I sat for thirty minunets trying to scroll thru all the posts for an answer before i bothered you guys, but i gotta ask. I want to replace my kitchen ceiling fan with a 6 foot fluorescent light. I have two phase wiring in an older home and an acoustic ceiling. Is this just crazy talk, or is it possible? If it CAN be done, i would love some advice on how to do it without paying an electrician!!

Certainly it's possible. The electrical work will be trivial, if and only if you carefully record all the connections before removing the existing fan. If you want a surface-mount fixture, the installation will also be pretty easy--the biggest job will be finding a joist to screw it to (since fluorescent fixtures are not supported by the electrical box as the fan is).
