I am installing a ceiling fan (with light) where a light used to be and have some questions on the wires.

The existing electrical box has 2 sets of wires - black, white, & bare (ground). Currently, the black from set 1 is attached to the black from the light fixture (with nut), the white from set 2 is attached to the white from the light fixture (with nut), the white from set 1 and black from set 2 are attached together with nut, and the bare wires from set 1 & 2 are twisted together (NO nut).

First question: is this correct? I am not familiar with the proper wiring of boxes with 2 sets of wires.

If this is all good, my assumption is to attach the blue and black from the fan to the black from set 1 and the white from the fan to the white from set 2. I would leave alone the attached set of white from set 1 and black from set 2. Then I would take the twisted bare wires (from both set 1 & 2) and attach them to the green from the fan using a wire nut.

Am I correct? Thanks for the help.

There are many possible reasons that you might have two cables in one box, but your situation is clearly a switch loop. It is correct. Don't mess with it.

The plan you presented for connecting your new fan is perfect. Make sure the box is fan-rated and secured well enough to support the weight of the fan. In most cases, this requires you to replace the box and improve the mount.
