Hello,

I have a 50 year old house that I would like to install hardwood floors. It is on a concrete slab, that originally had those vinyl tiles. Under the tiles are this black stuff. I had a few contractors come in to give me estimates. They stated that the black stuff was a moisture barrier that probably has asbestos in it. Some have said that I should do a floating floor. Others have said that I could put plywood down and install solid floor on top of it. Others still have said that they can remove the vinyl tiles, and do a glue down floor. Has anyone had experience with this? What is the best solution? I am not a fan of floating floors. The glue down method would be the best, I am doing hardwood throughout the house and the plywood plus hardwood would be a problem with the dishwasher.

Thanks,
Mark

As long as it isn't a solid wood, you can prep and glue the floor, but...

The tiles and the adhesive contain asbestos. You don't want to break up the tiles without them being wet, to keep dust eliminated. Some states it is against the law to remove asbestos, without being licensed to do so.

Your budget is going to love the floater, compared to the prep needed to do a gluedown!!!!!! To do it right
