We're rennovating our bathroom and just put up thick tumbled stone tile around the shower. I went to put the new tub fixtures on, and found that the spout pipe isn't long enough now to catch the threads on the new spout. Can I simply add another threaded nipple onto the end of the existing one to make it longer, or do I have to extend the pipe and put a new nipple on?

It depends on if you have copper or galvanized pipe coming out of the wall. If it's copper, You could unsweat the male adapter on the end and sweat in a coupling with a short piece of copper in it to get the length you need. If it's galvanized pipe, I would remove the old nipple and buy one that is the proper length. You can usually measure inside the spout to the start of the threads and to the back end of the spout and add 1/2" for overall length plus however far it goes into the wall. Good luck.

Thanks for the quick reply! Never sweated or unsweated pipe before. Best with a soldering iron or torch?
BTW, it is copper pipe.

Torch is the ONLY way to do it. I have included a link to help you out. Just click on it and have fun.
