Hello all, been a lurker here for a while and appreciate all the knowledge I've gained.

I want to build a wood privacy fence to replace a 4' chain link fence. I am looking at using the existing metal fence posts and using the Simpson PGTs to tie them to the wood fencing. However, the existing fence posts are 4' feet tall, and I want to install an 8' wood privacy fence on at least part of the fence. 6' would be the predominant height, but near the neighbors above-ground pool and deck, I would like something taller. This would be a section of approximately 60 LF. Zoning and code allow for an 8' fence with permit.

My main question--will the existing 4' fence posts work for the 8' and/or the 6' sections? If not, can I extend the height of them to the 6' or 8' height of the wood fence with a coupling and additional section of post? The existing posts seem secure, but I will certainly verify that before proceeding.

Any thoughts/suggestions would be great.

There are several ways to accomplish your desired goal. The first way is to put a sleeve over the existing posts, there are several premanufactured vinyl or metal systems your local building store should carry. Another way is to find a larger diameter metal post that will slide over the existing post instend of coupling same diameter posts together (coupling is often a weaker way of building). The last way and the way I recommend, is to use dimensional lumber say 2x4's on either side of the post and sandwiching the metal post inside them (by bolting them through or on either side of the metal post). This way hides the metal post and allows you to build the rest of your fence as if the post were normal 4x4's.

Thanks, RB. Sliding larger diameter posts over the existing ones seems the way to go for both strength and appearance.
