Dimmer Switches

i recently tapped 2 highhats into a fan. the fan is by remote control. the light on the fan can be turned off or dimmed without it affecting the highhats. the highhats stay on constantly, so i wanted to know if i could replace the current switch with a dimmer switch.

Not sure I understand everything about your situation, but I believe if you replace the current switch with a dimmer, your fan will hum for the rest of its short life.

why would it hum and why would it damage the fan? i would not use the dimmer when the fan light was on. only with the highhats. would that make it okay then?

If the power that runs the fan motor has to pass through the dimmer, then you will have trouble. If not, it should be okay. As I said, I didn't really understand your first post.
