I have saved a small section of the white picket fence that surrounded my mother's yard with the intent of making a headboard for a bed. I tested the old paint/wood and found that it contains lead. I would still like to use the fence, but eliminate any health risk.

If the old paint was stripped and the new paint were applied, would the section be suitable for use?

Once the old lead paint is removed the wood should be safe. If there is any lingering lead it would be negated by the new paint. Both lead and asbestos are somewhat worry free as long as they are completely covered. Breathing or ingesting the dust is where the danger is. Be sure to take all precautions when removing the old paint.
