We have a toilet that pivots ever so slightly on the one bolt that holds it to the floor.

We know we need to take it off the floor, fix/replace the broken bolt, and at some point, do something else with the wax seal.

Can anyone give a suggested step-by-step so we don't cause any more problems than we have?

Any and all help is greatly appreciated! :coffee:

The only way to FIX the problem is to remove the toilet and replace the wax seal and the broken bolt. Buy new bolts and a wax seal.
Turn off the water supply to the toilet. Flush it. Remove the remaining water in the tank and bowl with rags or a wet/dry vac. Remove the supply tubing from the bottom of the tank and remove the nut from the bolt that is holding the toilet down. Lay down a piece of plastic to sit the toilet on. Lift the toilet off the floor and lay it, tank side down, on the plastic. Use a putty knife to remove whats left of the wax seal on the flange and the toilet bottom.(This will tell you why plumbers get paid well) You may want to stuff a rag into the drain pipe while cleaning to keep sewer gases from coming into the house. Inspect the flange to make sure it is not cracked. Sit the new wax seal on the flange and slide the new bolts into the slotted holes on the flange. Press the bolts into the sides of the wax seal to hold them in place while you set the toilet back onto them. Press the toilet onto the seal and even sit on it to make sure it is seated. Put the washers on the bolts and then the nuts. Tighten firmly but do NOT over do it or you may crack the bowl. Hook up the water supply line and turn it on. Check for leaks. Good luck.
