Our water softener is a 15 year old Kenmore. We have a family of 5. We have a well. Currently it is set to regenerate everyday. I think there are times when we run out of soft water but we also go through so much salt, it seems we are wasting it.

Two water softener salesmen come out and look at the unit. Both said it is softening the water, but that it is not keeping up with demand because of its age.(Not sure if they are just trying to sell me a unit)

My question is how do I know if it needs to be replaced. Is it better to get a softner from a dealer who can install it and maintain it, or can I get the same quality and performance from a Sears/Home Improvement store model. I have had a hard time finding performance ratings for softners.
Thanks!

Your family water usage is pushing the water softener pretty hard, I would suspect. Being 15 years old and having been put through the paces as it has been makes it sound to me like the unit is like a car with over 200,000 miles. This is not a bad thing, and you certainly got your money's worth out of it!

I do not think that these salespeople were merely trying to sell you a new unit, if you look at it from the context of my explanation above. I also would definitely advise you to purchase a unit from a dealer who is dedicated to water treatment and can install it, and maintain it if you choose. The answers to your questions, service and support after the sale and knowledge you will receive will be of significant value, and you simply do not have this at a home center staffed by employees who are not trained or certified. Ask about the largest unit that is practical and affordable to service your family's needs.
