My Dad has a 42",17 hp Briggs Craftsman rider. The left side splined shaft creeps out of the transaxle case.We were told by a Sears rep. that the entire transaxle would need to be replaced at a cost of near $1000.Seems to me that whatever held the axle in either broke or came off and that an internal repair is possible.Am I wrong? Thanks.Bill Davis.

What is the model# of the mower? $1000 seems like an awfull lot for the repair. You are probably right, a snap ring probably just came off.

I still think a snap ring or retaining clip broke or came off. If you open the unit, make sure you clean it well before opening it up, and do the repair on a clean surface and keep any drit from getting inside the unit. They aren't very tolerable of trash in the system. A grand still sounds excessive, regardless of whether its a hydro or not.

Sears only shows the entire transaxle and no part# It lists it as TRANSAXLE PEERLESS MODEL 319-0650.
