View Full Version : Shallow Well Pump Pressure Problem

I have an acreage with the well about 150' from the old house. Previously there was a 1 1/4" pvc pipe coming from the well, 8' under ground, into the basement of the old house and the pump worked great. Two years ago I put a mobile home on the property due to mold problems in the old house. I dug down to the pipe, inserted an elbow, and ran a new pipe up under the mobile home. The first summer this worked great with the pump coming up to full pressure immediately after the first priming and working all summer long. The next spring I hooked everything up as before and could not bring the pump up to full pressure. I assumed that there must be a break in the line (since I did not bury it the full eight feet down due to the seasonal nature), so I ran a new 1 1/4" line from the well to the mobile home above ground thinking this would solve the problem - it didn't. I then bought a new foot valve - nothing. This year I bought a new pump thinking that it should work now that I've replaced the entire system - not so.
As it currently stands, I have a 1/2 hp shallow well pump attached to approx 100' of 1 1/4" pvc to the well, and about a 15' drop into the well. When I turn the pump on it runs constantly and builds pressure up to about 30psi but will go no higher than that. The pump is set for 30/50. I can use the water but the pump has to run constantly to keep the pressure up. Once I shut the pump off the pressure immediately falls to zero and sometimes loses its prime. I've checked and rechecked for leaks and have tried both pumps, several foot valves, and am sure there are no leaks in the new line. I am at a total loss, especially since it worked so well before with the old line. Please help!
