We just moved into a rental and had a break in less than a month after. I'd like to change the garage door opener freq since they may have gotten in using an old remote but I'm not sure how to do this and have no manual. Its a craftsman, model 139. 53970srt

there are 2 dials on the back, each one labeled 1 3 5 7 9. do i just turn those?

also it said to erase all "receiver codes" to hold this red button down for 6 seconds which i did. does that sound like it would stop old remotes from working again?

By holding down the green button you did erase all the codes in the receiver.

nothing to worry about with someone breaking in by an old remote.

Whether just pushing the reset button and then reprogramming your remotes was effective depends on the type of remote you have. If any of your remotes have DIP switches (look where the battery is) then what you did will NOT prevent an old remote from working. In that case, you would need to do a reset again, change the DIP switches to a different code, and then program them.

Suppose one of your old remotes, and the theoretical remote the thief may have, both have DIP switches that are identical. When you reprogrammed your remote, you also reprogrammed his/hers since they use the same code. Changine your DIP switches is the fix, as it changes your remotes code. Depending on your opener, you may need to set the DIP switches on all of your remotes to be identical (which, I believe, would mean only having to program one remote to make all of them work).

Well heres the problem. We do not have a remote for the garage. The rental people have lost track of them over the years. Is it possible to just disable the part that allows the remotes to work until we move out? The garage is mainly storage so I don't need a remote for it. I stuffed the antenna wire into the opener housing hoping it might make it harder to use. Anything else I can do?

In that case, the reset you did is all you need to do. Until a remote is programmed, no remote will open it.

Of course, if you REALLY wanted to be sure, you could just unplug the unit...
