I'm replacing my 8 year old working TempStar 2 ton central AC compressor & Air Handler with a 2 1/2 ton Trane central Compressor and Handler.
My Question is. What should I do with the Old unit?
I mean It still works and everything. I live in Florida and man,.. summer just started and boy is it hot already thats why i wanted a more effective AC unit. I was told that Trane is one of the Best Units on the Market hands down. I was also told it would last 13-18 years no problem.
Is my old unit worth anything? The coils are rusted in the handler but thats about the only thing wrong with it besides it being to small to keep the house cooled down to 74 in the summer.
The salesman told me that they'll haul it away for me free and they put it in the back of the shop where someone comes everyday to pick up the old units. What do you think this person who picks up the old units does with them??
Man I'd hate to just give away something for free if it's actually worth something to someone.
So what do you folks do with your older working central AC compressors and Handlers?
Any suggestions or thoughts would be helpful to me.
Thank you.
Jim.

let them take them away for you. they will still have some freon in them and next you will come up with the EPA on you neck about that. I dont know if the blower in the air handler is 110V or 220V thats about the only thing to take out of the unit and keep to use. Down here in Fl you should have put a hot water recovery unit on this new AC it would give you free hot water for many months of the year.

What about the Squirrel fan and all the copper and stuff inside of the compressor and handler. I mean is there anything that i could take out and maybe make a quick dollar or two on ebay selling or something. I know those Squirrel fans are not cheap by any means...

Im in West Palm Beach right over on the east side. Now the unit you have is good but for here you should have got a seer of 14 and put a hot water recovery unit on it. that would give you 8 months free hot water and kick up the seer of the unit you have. Now pull the blower out if you want dont for get it can be 220V. But all the rest let them take it The oil in it still has some freon in it so you have to be EPA to mess with it. let it go ,it can cost you more down the line with the oil and freon in it.

I was also told starting Jan 2006 the min they can put into a new home will be a 13 seer.
The one i got made by trane is costing me $4500. Thats about $4000 more dollars than what I have being on disability and all. My home is under 1100 sqft. it's like 1080 or something.

how much extra is a "Hot Water Recovery System" ? It's just the wife and I so we dont use to heck of a lot of water so i'm trying to figure cost of recovery vs. our water useage.

2 1/2 TONS may be oversized. Hope you had a written Manual J heat/cool load calculation provided to you.
Since you live near/around water, check to see new units have coastal type package. I believe it is available.
I just replaced my old Trane XE1000 AC condenser and donated it to Habitat for Humanity. I intend to take a tax deduction for it. I would contact local charities/church etc and see if there is any interest. You will not get anything from a dealer for old unit and it sounds like the air handler is pretty much gone except for possibly a few parts that might be cannibalized. Make certain your dealer properly decommissions old unit within environmental guidelines.
Good Luck!

A company named "Home Tech" They've been around for a long time.. Longer then i've been here and i've been in florida since `86. It's a big company. I had about 6 companies out here. 2 salesman acted like they hated their job and told me i needed to replace everything from the copper tubing to 1" to adding a cut off switch next to the handler.
The salsman that came from Home Tech was the only one to actually use a tape ruler to measure the current system, took photos and even a drawn diag of the system inside the garage. he checked the copper tubing and said that it was fine for up to a 3 ton and explained that no cut off switch was needed because the breaker box was located right next to the unit in the garage where the others wanted to charge me $200 for that and $400 for new copper Tubing, he checked the Air return and the outside ducts for the handler, plus he was the only one who offered to fix it on his own time until the new system was installed. I tipped him $20 bucks for his time even though i'm sure he would have made more on a real service call. None of the others even showed me what the CFM were of the air handler. Everyone else wanted to sell me a Frigidaire unit because of the warranty but Home Tech showed me that Frigidaire had the lowest CFM of most all other Handlers out there.
Out of the 6 companies that came out everyone of them except home tech could have installed a new system within a day or two where with Home Tech I had to wait for the install. which could mean they're really busy and the other are not or maybe under staffed. it could have meant a lot of things but he wasnt in a hurry to sell me something and get it installed. He even told me that by going with them that they werent even the cheapest to go with but that they'd always be there if something ever happened.
I felt very comfortable with the salesman and the company.
And from what I've read Trane is a pretty good AC unit. lol none of the other companies even sold Trane. He explained that I didnt want to get to Big of a Tonage because even tho it'd cool the house down it wouldnt draw out the humidity as well and it'd feel like a wet cool instead of a dry cool. It was $100 more for the 2 1/2 ton vs. the 2 ton so thats how we decided on a 2 1/2 ton.
When you had your Trane XE1000 were you happy with it? what did you replace it with?
As far as donating it to someone,.. I wouldnt want to give them a problematic system so i'll just let them take it away and be done with it i guess.

An observation. I realize the increase in price from a 2 ton to a 2 1/2 ton system is inconsequential. Just be sure that it is sized right. Both an undersized system and an oversized system can be big problems especially where you live. I would look into the coastal package.
I prefer doing business with authorized dealers because it gives the homeowner an additional measure of protection. You might want to check the status of "HomeTech". I agree that a new properly sized lineset is standard procedure and I would not use the old lineset. This is a shortcut I don't like to see homeowners take. And as far as a disconnect at the location of condenser, this is a good safety procedure but code should be followed.
Trane and Frigidaire are 2 different types of equipment. I replaced my
old Trane with a new Trane.
My opinion. Good LucK!

LOL,.. so if i called up the company replacing my AC and said, Hey I want to come pick up all your used / old condensers and handlers stuff you've gotten from your customers they'd charge me a certain amount for them?
I actually believe that to. It's like a car or truck,.. seems like they have to make money off you 2-3 different ways.
I'll ask them when they come to replace it if the current dude has to pay to come pick that old stuff up or if they just give it away.
It reminds me of a story i once heard.
A woman goes to turn the hot water on and theres no hot water. she calls a repairman to come out to fix the hot water heater. when the repairman gets out there, He looks at it and hits the pipe with his hammer and says. That'll be $100 please. The woman says I'm not paying you $100 to hit my pipe with a hammer! The man says,. Lady your not paying me to hit the pipe with a hammer, Your paying me to know where to hit the pipe with the hammer! Doh,..
Sure he'll give it away, for about $300.00 to $400.00 :)

The Manual J is an HVAC calculation that is used in properly sizing equipment for residential homeowners. The calculation has been formatted to computer software. It is widely used and accepted by professional HVAC dealers. It takes into consideration the characteristics of your home including size, insulation properties, placement of home(N-E-S-W), windows, area climate, number of people living in home, and your individual comfort level. Depending on size of home, this take-off can take a couple of hours if properly performed. I would recommend that you get an actual copy of the Manual J.
