A friend ran over a big rock. The result is a vibration now. Its starts fine .
I'm going to replace the blade as it has a a big ding in it. suspect the blade is bent and will replace it. Is there anything else i should check out? If the 'key' is sheared,how do i replace it?
Its a sears 6.5, self propelled about 1 1/2 yeras old.

Blade and blade adapter...look at the belt cover and drive pulley and other items for any signs of disturbance. Usually tho there is enuff hardware between the blade and the crank, that is will entail damage b4 the crank.
The blade may have also come off the locator pins on the blade adapter or sheared one or both. A puller may be required to remove the adapter, which should be checked for distortion.

Hopefully just a bent blade, but probably a bent crankshaft. :(

Check the new blade's balance before installing it just to make sure it's all good to go.

Good point. I'm also going to rig up something to try and check the 'runout' of the shaft to see if its turning true.

Just a update. replaced the blade and it still vibrates bad. Everything looks o.k. externally I suggested he take it to a repair shop. Bent crank??

Depending on exactly where the bend is, you could get into trouble with the crank bearing (part of the sump cover) and the oil seal. The shop you brought it to may suggest straightening the crank...I strongly urge you not to. Crankshafts are hardened, when a bend occurs the metal is fractured. When it is straightened (and believe me, it will never come back to original form), it doubles the fracture. It now becomes more than twice as likely to break off and cause some serious damage...both to the machine as well as the possibility of injurying the operator or worse, bystanders.

I agree. I would opt for a new crank myself. My friends lawnmower is a Sears. He wanted to take it back to them because if it isn't right he can bring it back to them. Hopefully they have competent people in their shop and won't try to mickey-mouse the fix.. I will check it out when he gets it back.
