I have a Ruud central AC that's about 5 years old. I haven't previously had any problems with it.

Over the weekend, I've had to reset the unit 3 times by pressing the high pressure reset switch. It's been in the upper 90's for about a week and very humid, so this hasn't been a pleasant weekend.

Under what conditions does the unit normally need to be reset? What problems would be indicated by frequent resets?

I suspect it is probably the switch itself. Originally there was a weather protected rubber or vinyl bulb with a spring mechanism and it appears that a squirrel or some other critter made a snack of the bulb. In order to reset I now have to slide a thin rod into hole where the bulb used to be and press.

Is there a way to determine whether the it is the switch vs. some other problem?

Thanks!

Id call a tech in. You would have to put gauges on the unit to start to tell if its just the switch or not. Is the air filter clean the coils inside and out clean? Might check them first. Is the big copper line cold and wet? Id still put gauges on it to say its good or bad on it.

If the problem is something other than the switch, is there a chance I am doing damage by continuing to reset it until I can get a tech out?

Thanks

I would let it off till some one can put gauges on it to see just what is going on there. You can run just the inside fan ok.
