View Full Version : Curosity is killing me....
Just out of curosity, how does one pull up the submersible pump for replacement?
I have a 3 inch well and have been wondering what happens to the wires and supply lines when it comes out. I have this image of a very long pipe that is hoisted up by a crane but that can't be it......I think.

You have it right. But they can take the pipe apart or if plastic it will bend some on the ground.

It's actually not that complicated, if you have a PVC well. You can do it with a buddy, by unbolting the well head, and just lifting the drop pipe out of the well. the flexibility of the pipe will allow the pipe to bend and lay on the ground.
The pump is simply threaded to the end of the pipe and can be replaced easily. Make sure you use the highest quality waterproof heat shrink connectors to re-attach the electrical wires. Usually they are provided with a new pump. Then lower the pipe back down the well and re-seal the compression fitting.

if your well is like mine ..the pipe is secured into a type of 90 degree elbow about 6 feet down the casing...it has a threaded female connection built into it...you screw a piece of 1 inch black pipe into it and give it one good jerk to pop it out of the saddle....when you make yoru repairs you insert it with one quick jab downwards (once you know it it in the right spot)....flashlight helps with this

If your drop pipe is black poly pipe, you might be able to pull it by hand. If it is pvc sch 80 (20' lenghts, screwed together) It would be much safer to have a pro do it with a pump hoist truck or portable pump puller. Be safe, be carefull and remember that if you drop the pump and pipe down the well, it will ruin your day!
