I have two window A/Cs....a Fedders and a GE remote control. One is in an East window and the other in a West window. They can't both be broken in the same way. They are both about 3 years old, I keep the filters clean and cover them during the winter. I live in an apartment and can't take them out.

They cool very well UNTIL the temps go up. We've been having some hot days with heat indexes into the 100s and you can feel cool air coming from them UNTIL the heat comes......then I have to keep fans running in the rooms and you can't feel cool air coming from them. So....it can get a bit uncomfortable when you NEED them most  ......and they can freeze you out when it's NOT that hot outside.

Is this normal when the humidity is high? Should I hose them off on the ouside to help this? I had a neighbor who had someone come in to look at hers, charged her over $80, and she StILL had the same problem and couldn't get the person to return her calls......I can't afford that. Who can!

Do you have any idea why they are doing this? Thank you very much for your time and any suggestions you may have.

Shirley in Illinois :)

Hi Shirley,

Did you always have this problem with them not cooling when the temp is really high? If not they may only need to be cleaned really good but no you can't clean them from the "outside", they would have to be taken out of the window and then remove the unit from the cage in which it sits in and begin to clean them from that point, why can't you remove them from the window?

Thanks for the quick response. NO.....I have only had the problem this year. I thought cleaning them inside might be the problem.

As to why I can't take them out.....I meant to store away for the winter. But, it would be hard for me physically. I'm 61 and have some spine problems. Is this something my son could do. He's an engineer but NOT a mechanic....he never works on his own car and such. I called a friend and she used a local company to do this for two of her window A/Cs and it cost her $79 for cleaning of both. Does that sound reasonable?

BUT.....it would still be kinder to my small budget if this is something my son could do.....HE has muscles! :D

Thanks again,
Shirley

I have no doult that your son cannot clean the unit.
Get him to take it out of the cage, wrap the fan motor with plastic, then mix you up some bleach and water and spray the coils really good, let sit ten mins. and begin to flush the coils out, once done let it dry some and pit back the unit in the cage, put a new filter on it and turn it on, depending on how dirty the coils are it should help a lot.
