Hello,

It's been super hot lately. I did the usual filter change to help the AC unit do it's job more efficiently (and man that old one was clogged up, call me negligent :( ). Afterwards I noticed upstairs that I had closed all the vents, something I did last winter as heat rises well into the open second floor and didn't want to spend heat blowing up there.

I opened them back up again today, and there's no air coming through them that I can tell. Some vents are 'many vent' ones with alot of slats that have accumulated dust on them, leading me to believe they are intakes. The others tho still don't seem to have much air if any coming out. The downstairs vents blow hard enough to move the leaves on plants 10 feet away, make my hair blow in the wind if I stand anywhere near them.

Is it normal for a main circuit to get the best flow and the leftover to go upstairs? Thanks for your comments and thoughts.

Scott

edit: ok, there is some air coming out of those upstairs vents, just not much. I'm thinking maybe this is a case of the nearest to the unit get the most? Its just the downstairs ones really blow hard and the upstairs are meager.

What you are noticing is one of the most common complaints we hear. Short of a complete duct re-design there isn't much you can do. If there are dampers at the branch takeoffs from the main duct, you can try shutting down some of the downstairs branches. Usually closing registers does liitle to no good.
