View Full Version : Is there a prize for stumping you w/celing fan problem? Please help!!
I am replacing a ceiling fan w/light in the bedroom. The hallway light, bedroom light and socket are on the same circuit. The hallway light is a 3-way switch. The bedroom switch has only 2 wires (black and white) wires coming from the bedroom socket. Ceiling box has 2 blk and 2 wht wires. Two black wires and 1 white wire is hot, the remaining white wire is not hot. The ceiling fan is controlled by remote control. The receiver on fan has 1 blk and 1 wht wire. I've tried every possible combination without success. I have power at all switches, but the hallway light and bedroom fan/light do not work. What is going on here? Any suggestions? Pls help.
Thanks :wall:

have a switch loop. One of the black/white pair in the cieling is power. The other cable goes to the switch. I'm assuming that you've figured out which cable is which.
Try this: At the cieling box, connect the black power to switch cable white (mark this cable black to show it's being used as a hot wire), power white to cieling fan white, black switch cable to black fan cable. No changes to the wall switch.
Since the fan has a remote, could you just connect the power wires to remote control unit? Ignoring the wall switch?
More ideas: make sure that the pull chains/switches on the fan are on, reset breaker, check the reverse switch on the fan, check the remotes batteries. Is this remote factory installed? There should be 5 or more wires from the remote box- black and white for incoming power, one wire for light kit power, one wire for motor power, and a common nuetral. Check all these connections.
It's possible that you accidently blew the remote control system while wiring it. Can you bypass it and connect the cieling power wires directly to the fan? Does a standard light fixture work at the cieling? (Maybe temporarily wire an outlet at the cieling and test a drill or light to make sure it works?) Maybe a bad wall switch, remove the switch and temporarily wire nut the two wires togehter?
Trying to help!
Thank you for your post and your wiring help. I wired the fan like you said, everything had power but hall light and fan were not working. I traced the circuit back to an outlet that was main power source way down the hall. The outlet had blown, I replaced it with a new outlet and EUREKA...everything now works. I probably blew the outlet when I was originally trying to hook up ceiling fan. Thank you for your help!! :)
