My a/c unit seems to be working fine, but when it runs sometimes the blower does not come on and then little air comes through the vents. The air that does comes out is cold but it is not enough to cool the house down. I called a service man right away and while waiting for him I changed the air filter and shut off the a/c for two hours. I went back in to the furnance room because I heard water running and there was water all over the floor, I just finished cleaning it up and the serviceman showed up, I told him what had happened and he told me it was likely the dirty air filter. He went outside and checked the a/c unit and he borrowed a broom from me and cleaned it up, he said it was pretty dirty. He also sealed the duct work to the furnance with clear silicone because that is where the water leaked out instead of going down the drain tube. I ran my air conditioner before he left and I could feel more air but still the temperature on the thermostat did not go down, he said it would likely take sometime, well after several hours the house stayed at the same temperature. the next day everything seemed to be working as normal and the house was staying cool, well that only lasted for three days. Now I have the same problem again. I phoned the serviceman last night and I asked him if he thought that I needed a freon recharge or if he had checked that while he was here, he said no he hadn't checked it and that he thinks I have a circulation problem and that my coils inside could be dirty. Our house is only 5 years old and the furnance and a/c are also 5 years old. My husband took out the blower fan and took a look at it and cleaned it and the inside and then he said some wires were loose and he tightened those. He used his shop vac to suction out the excess water where the coils were and all the rust. The coils are very clean, but he used the vacuum on them just in case there was dirt we couldn't see. Is there anything else we can do ourselves and do you think we should phone a different repairman since this guy is sure that we don't need a recharge even though he has never checked to see if we do?

Thanks for you help!

Id call a new tech for sure. That guy should have put gauges on it to check it out. the big copper line at the outdoor unit has to be cold and wet when the unit is running. if things are ok.

Thanks for the tip, I will check on the outside line today. The air conditioner ran fine again yesterday. When I checked the big copper line inside the house it is cool and the little copper line inside the house gets hot. Should the little line in the house be hot? I will definately cancel my appointment with the old repairman.

The big copper line has to be cold and wet as it goes back into the outdoor unit outside. little line can be just warm like.

Thats what mine was doing but i knew i was going to start having problems with my AC unit anyway soon because it drips water, the coils are all rusted and its not cooling the house down as quickly as i'd like so when i had a salesman come out to the house for an est for a new compressor and handler he told me that they couldnt install it until July 8th. well at that time when he told me this, July 8th was 24 days away. I told him there was no way i coulod go that long down here in florida with no AC so the next day after buying a system from him he came out and replaced the umm,.. semi conductor and the relay switch in the air handler and now my system is back up and working. he did this for free because as he said i bought a system from him, i asked him then how much it would have costed to just repair the problem or just what he did and he said about $130. Doh,.. I spent over 4k for a new trane from him and $130 is a lot less.

Ed, Sorry if this question sounds dumb, but the big copper line seems okay, but the little line gets really hot, does that mean theres a problem and what is running through that line?

Thanks, Colleen

Jowondering,

I wasn't thinking of replacing anything because my unit is only 5 years old....how old was your unit ?

You really need to have some one check your freon, It could be low, as said here the tech should have checked it for you.

The small line should not be hot, warm yes, but not hot. If the tech simply cleaned the outdoor unit with a broom you still could have issues with the outdoor unit. As Hiltontech said, you need to get someone to check the refrigerant pressures. I too suggest finding a different tech.
