Help!

I’ve been having a/c problems now for about 6 weeks, which has resulted in 6 or 7 service calls. I first had my system diagnosed with a leak that resulted in the replacement of a/c valves, freon and the a-coil.

Unfortunately since the repair work, I’ve not been able to get the temperature in my house below 73F, according to the display on my programmable thermostat. When I manually adjust the thermostat to 72F or 71F, the display temperature rises to 74F and the unit will not shut off until I reset the temperature to 73F.

I’m wondering if the problem is due to the thermostat, the a/c, or a part.

BTW – my service calls and parts are covered under a warranty program, so there’s no incremental cost to me.

This past week a service technician took a look and told me that the problem was due to an installation error. According to him, the replacement a-coil is sized for a 2-ton a/c unit, while my a/c is a 2.5 ton. He ordered a 2.5 ton unit a-coil to be installed.

A second service technician came by later in the week to install the 2.5 ton unit a-coil. He didn’t do the installation, and convinced me the problem was likely due to poor air return. Basically, he said that a 2.5 ton unit a-coil wouldn’t provide any significant cooling benefit from a 2 ton. I was also told that if I was to replace the a-coil, a 3-ton unit would be best.

We went through the house and checked the vent temperature. Air was flowing from the vents at about 60F. He suggested I close the air return vent in the basement (I did) and the air return vent located by the thermostat on the main floor (I did), as well as hose down the a/c to remove build-up. I followed his advice but basically this didn’t solve the problem.

What is the problem? Is it a potentially faulty thermostat, do I need to install a bigger a-coil, or is it something else? This has dragged on for too long and I would greatly appreciate some direction.

You have a mess on your hands it appears, did they re-check your charge?
Do this, go behind your outside unit, behind the unit you will see two copper lines, the bigger one should be cold (not cool) and wet while the a\c is running and the smaller one should be warm but "not hot), check this out and let us know, it's a touch call being we here aren't on site which where your unit is located.

Get back to us, we will try to help you find the problem if it's at all possible

Hi. I don't believe the service technician rechecked the charge, but the air temp from the vents was at 60F. I'm assuming that's ok since he didn't seem concerned.

I checked the outside unit today while the a/c was running. The copper lines were as you indicated: the larger one was cold and wet and the smaller line was warm.

I am getting about 10-15 min on and 5-10 minutes off cycle time, or about 3-4 cycles per hour depending on the outside temperature.

The temp on the thermostat today increased to 74F as the minimum.

Does it make sense that I could have a faulty thermostat? The thermostat (Honeywell programmable 5+2) is 8 years old, and I'm not sure what the normal lifespan is.

Thanks in advance for your response.
