I have a Craftsman lawn tractor in which the battery sometimes discharges when it is not used for a few days. I did some voltmeter checking, engine not running, and found that zero voltage shows from ground wires to the frame, but when I check ground wires to true ground (a metal stake driven into the soil) or frame to true ground, the reading is about 0.25 volts DC.
Is this normal or does it indicate a short circuit somewhere in the system?

Hello JC. Most likely your batt is nearing the end of it's life and it's time for a new one. The reading that you are getting on your meter is a phantom reading and in no way shows potential difference (voltage) to the earth. You will get the same reading with either probe in your hand.
