View Full Version : A/C Unit not turning on

It has been a lovely 95+ degrees for the last week and we expect more this weekend and next week. I turned on my A/C, in the house I bought this past Dec., which was working lovely until last night. I came back in from mowing the lawn and it wasn't quite so cool inside anymore. I usually keep the temp set up high (I am so damn broke at this point) so I turned it down and the fan was running but no cool air.

I went into the basement and there is nothing wrong with the fan. I went outside and the unit itself is just sitting there like a big chunk of metal wasting space with nothing to do. I checked the fuses (and changed them) inside and out with no luck at all.

I really do not want to have to call my warranty company and pay the deductible to find out that it was something that I could have fixed in less than 5 minutes for $5 as I have in the past. :wall:
Can anyone tell me what I need to check and how so that I know if I have to call the warranty company (home warranty, not a/c, they are like vampires in disguise and suck your money from your bank accounts instead of your veins).

You can jump R to Y at the tstat if outside comes on its in the tstat. If not see if you have 24V at the outdoor contactor and it dont pull in. If not is there a reset switch for high head or low pressure. Lots of of ifs ifs here yet.

From that "WHAT" Id say call a hvac tech to check it out.
For what I asked most DIY can check that part out and can use a meter to check the volts at the unit. :wall:

I lost you at the R to Y at the Thermostat. I am not sure what you are talking about there.

I just don't know where to look for the reset switch.

At the tstat you have a R and Y there put a jumper across them and see if the out door unit will come on.
If it is a reset switch it will be in the outdoor unit. There can be 220V in there. Thats why I said call a tech to look at it :wall:

You seem like a nice enough guy but you don't seem to know anything about your unit, do yourself a favor and call out a tech if you can afford it or maybe a friend can help you, bring a friend to this site and let him read it himself, maybe between the two of you ,you could figure it out.
Dame I hope no one takes my reply out of context because I was just trying to give you good advice.

Good Luck
