I have a small window unit, only 2 years old acting very odd. I have it turned all the way to cold. The compressor kicks on and off randomly. Sometimes it stays on for a day sometimes off for a day.
No matter how hot or cold inside or out. Found what I think to be the temp probe I tried warming it up thinking that would kick the compressor on, but to no avail. Cannoy find any pattern to what makes it kick on or off, just seems completely random. Works great when compressor does kick in.
Anyone have any idea what is wrong or how I can just eliminate the thermostat to just have it always on ?

is this one of those dial type t-stat on the unit?
Lot of times they are not "True" for temp settings.. But sounds like it way out of wack..
I would w/ care and see if the t-stat is cutting out the compressor, or the compressor it cutting itself out on a limit.

yes it is a dial type thermostat. I have it turned all the way to cold. I just can't seem to find any pattern to when it turns on or off. Last day or so the compressor goes on for approx a half hour then off for a half hour.
It hotter than hell here so it's not like it kicking off because the room is cooled down.

What do you mean by this, how can I test this ?

do you have a multi meter to take a reading to see if the t-stat is cutting out or power is feeding the compressor the whole time but it still turns off.. If you are getting power from the t-stat while it cuts out, then look at the compressor.
