Covering existing concrete porch area with flagstone
I have a porch that is a tetrahedron, about 5x5 on one side and 5x12 on the other:
front door to house
..._________
../..............\
./ little porch \
/..................\
---------------
....brick step
....brick step
It's about 28 inches off the ground. Small front porch. The back is huge.
It's block built, with 4" slab on top (25 years old - solid, but ugly) and stucco around the sides. The steps are standard red brick.
The structure is very solid and very ugly. I want to cover with flagstone, but I'm unsure how to do it.
1. Certain kind of morter?
2. different kind for the verticla sides than the slab on top?
3. do the heavy flag stones just stick to the sides with morter or is there a trick?
4. how do i go about cutting the stones for this? I'm going for a rough look to match the house ("California Contemporary" - think Brady Bunch.)
I have worked with concrete before, but only for setting and plumming posts, etc.
I tried to find a search function to no avail.
help?

i did the same thing. i used regular quikrete mortar from home depot. to cut the flagstone, i used a diamond tipped saw blade that fits onto a standard 7-1/4" circular saw. it creates a lot of dust so cut downwind. it works great.
to lay out the random pieces, i layed a few the way i wanted, then took a sharpie, and traced around the perimeter onto the existing concrete. this way i new exactly where to spread the mortar for each stone. be sure to start high near the house with the bead of mortar, then slowly taper off to create a slope away from the house.
