There's a freezer in my parents' garage. They don't need to store anything in it at this time so I'd like to shut it off and/or unplug it to save energy. They may not need to use it for quite a while. Will it damage the freezer to be unplugged for an extended period of time (like months or years)? It's a freezer only, NOT a refrigerator/freezer

Not a problem. Just put something in door to keep it propped open so it doesn't get musty, moldy over time. Dave

Wipe off any moisture that forms after the unit has gone to ambiant temperature. As stated, prop the door open to let air circulate and not get musty. If there is any way at all, make it so a child could not be playing and get locked into it. Happens too many times.
