I have a 50's (I believe) American Kitchen Metal Cabinet that is a little dingy and starting to rust near the bottom. I would like to repaint. I read on another website that I could super-clean, sand, and dust the cabinet, then paint it with automotive paint. Can someone verify this is the right direction to head in - or give me any tips?
Not painting is not an option - the rust is due to pets of the previous owner. :wall:
Thank you in advance.

Yes, it can be done the way you describe. Auto paint is very expensive and overkill IMO. A good oil enamel would suffice also.

Thank you!
I agree with PWG. Oil enamel should give plkenty of protection and is cheaper and easier to apply. Personally I would use industrial enamel but most oil base enamels should give good wear and protection. Don't forget to sand all the rust off first.
I would try using a rust converter like Jasco's after sanding and cleaning. Then prime and paint w/oil base as recommended. Automotive finishes won't stop rust any better. Rust needs oxygen (can be from water -H2O) so make sure both sides get sealed off from moisture.
