View Full Version : Low Air Flow

I have 30+ yr old Luxaire furnace with a 9 yr old 2-Ton American Standard A/C unit. We are on a concrete slab with approx. 1100 sq ft.

My a/c unit is not cooling the house. It will cool for about 30 - 60 minutes and then you cannot feel hardly any air coming out and it is definitely not cold. After the initial operating time, the air flow decreases. However, when I run just the fan, it seems as though I do not loose the airflow. However, the airflow overall is less than what it has been in the past.

Additionally, the furnace seems to have a tumbling noise when operating. Could the blower cage be bad? Are there bearings in the blower cage that could go bad?

The service tech. checked the condenser unit for leaks and did not find any. He did say that it seems that there is not enough air flowing over the coil. Naturally, he wants to sell me a new, more efficient furnace rather than talk about possible repairs to the existing furnace. The filter did need changing. However, I ran the unit without the filter for a short time and the same thing happened.

The fan motor is 1/3 hp and was changed when the a/c unit was installed 9 years ago.

Any ideas or suggestions are greatly appreciated.
