Hello,
I have a home in the northeast that I would like to air condition. The heating system is ductless (hot water) and I dislike window units. I am very interested in using a mini split system but cannot find much on the internet about it (efficiency, installation, btu's and such). My downstairs (street level) has a large kitchen, bath, bedroom, den and large family room (24X28)with vaulted ceiling. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Mini splits do well for open areas. I think for your application, you would be far better off with a ducted system. If you want to research mini splits, Sanyo, Mitsubishi (Mr. Slim), & others make them.
