It looks like my 15-20 year old central air conditioner finally bought the farm. My questions is this. Would it make sense (and save money) to replace both the central air and furnace at the same time? Or should I just replace the air conditioner and wait until the furance finally goes. I believe the furnace is just as old, if not older than the air conditioner. I have been in the house for almost eight years and the house itself is about 50 years old.

If furnace is older than 10 yrs old, I would look into a complete matching system from the same HVAC manufacturer. Depending upon area you live, look at a minimum 13 SEER AC condenser with matching coil, and gas furnace of 80-90+ AFUE rating. Insist upon a written Manual J heat/cool load calculation for properly sizing equipment and have your ductwork surveyed as well. Get minimum 3-4 quotes or until you find dealer that inspires confidence and trust. Stay away from budget/builder models.

My opinion.
Good Luck!
