I am about to build the railing on my deck. In one of the deck books (Stanley - Complete Decks) they talk about lag bolting a vertical 2x4 to the house to attach the railing to, instead of using a 4x4 post on the deck (pg 155).
This has me confused. How can you lag bolt a 2x4 to the house without flashing it somehow? If you can't do this for a ledger, why can you do it for this piece (if you can do it).
If you can do this, how do you determine if it is safe to drive those lags in?
Thanks in advance!

I think the correct way to do this is place a 4x4 post close to the wall and it is connected like the other posts. Anything penatrating the exterior wall will likely cause problems in the future. That being said, if there is a way to attach the post to the wall and keep the water out, I'd like to know about it.
