GE Profile top-load washing machine.... spins empty and will start spinning then stop. I suspect something is broken/loose, but not a whole belt because it wouldn't spin at all(?). Spins very erratically when spinning... like whatever holds it to center isn't there. It freaks the washing machine out. Then it stops. Hope this makes sense. THANKS.

If this is a fairly newer model GE. It could be the dampning straps that hold the top of the outer tub in place while spinning. To get at them you have to remove the front panel of the washer. Use a putty knife or skinny screwdriver
to push in on the clips located at the front left & right of the top of front panel. Pull the top of the panel towards you & lift the panel up to remove. You can then see 2 rubber straps mounted to the frame & bolted to the tub in the front. There are also 2 more in the back. ( This will be on the top of tub ). They have a bad habit of breaking & the tub shakes violently on spin.
If the straps are broke they are fairly easy to replace. There is a screw on both sides holding the top panel of washer. Remove these & pull the top towards you, unhook the wiring harness & the whole top comes off. You can then get at straps. Straps should be available at any appliance store or Sears. Take along your washer model #. Dave
