Does anyone have any comments on the Americast material durability/performance? Thanks in advance for any help.

American Standard has a material for tubs and sinks called Americast®, from their web site: “Americast has the same thickness as cast iron, but half the weight. How? We press the sink or bathtub out of a high-quality alloy and apply a smooth, glossy porcelain finish. Then, we bond it with a structural composite. It's sturdy and sound. Timeless like cast iron. Extra durable. Americast acts as an insulator to keep bath water hot, so you can stay in that warm, cozy bath longer. “ The material is backed by a limited lifetime warranty and is relatively inexpensive.

This is what a plumber told me: It looks like cast iron, weighs about half what cast iron does, and it holds heat well. But, my first choice would be a cast-iron tub because they historically are very durable and are a good investment.

Thanks for the advice twelvepole. I am looking for a durable product since the house may one day be a rental. There is no disputing the reputation and durability of cast iron.

I put in an Americast tub approximately 5 years ago. It still looks great.

If there was ANY chance it was going to be rented out, I would go with the cast iron. There have been a few negative posts here about Americast tubs and the warranty. Replacing a tub is not something you want to do too often. Good luck.
