Please help me identify the wires. I bought a new ceiling fan with lights and attempted to install. The fan has three wires Black(hot wire for fan), Blue (hot wire for optional light kit) and White (common for fan and light kit). In addition it has one pigtail green wire attached to the mounting bracket. My house wires are White, Black/Gray, Red and bare copper wire. I connected fan white to home white, fan black to home black/gray, fan blue to home red and fan green to home bare copper wire and neither the fan nor the lights work. I again tried to rotate the wires and tried but it didn't work at all. What am I doing wrong? Please help me. Thank you all.

If you have separate switches for the light and fan, the way you wired it to start is the most likely. Was this the way the old fan was wire? Make sure you pull the chains to start the fan and light when you first install the fan. It can be real frustrated if you don't think to pull the chains DAMHIKT

As Phil says, the way you wired it is the normal way. Check to make sure the pull chains are in the correct position, the wall switch(es) are on, and the breaker is on. If the unit has a remote control, also make sure the batteries are installed and fresh, and that the remote control is used to turn it on.

Thank you for your replies. On my way from work I stopped by Lowe's and bought a voltage detector and tested the wires. Believe it or not there was no voltage in any of the wires. I made sure the circuit breaker for that room was on, the light switch was on but still no live wire (red, white, black or bare copper). I have tested wall sockets, other wires and I am 100% sure that the voltage detector is working. Now what could the problem be? Please help.
Thank you!!

Has anything ever worked at this location?

How exactly did you make sure the circuit breaker is on? Did you shut it off and back on again?

Next thing is to examine the wires in the switch box. If nothing has ever been here before, it could be that the wires aren't connected in the switch box.

There was nothing that was connected to this site in the ceiling before. It was covered with a white round metal, I removed the metal and found the box with those wires appearing ready to use. All the other bedrooms have fans at a similar location in the middle of the rooms. The specific circuit breaker controls two of the bedrooms. Yes, I turned it off and nothing in both bedrooms worked. When I turned it back on everything else worked other than the one we are talking about. The switch box does not appear to control anything otherthan probably the the fan because when I turned it on and off nothing would happen and none of the functioning lights and sockets seem to be affected. I will open and see if wires are connected and let you know.
Thank you!!

Well I am so happy to report that I was able to get the fan and light working. This is how it happened. I took your suggestion and opened the switch box last night. However, I had no idea what I was looking for. I saw one red and one black wires attached to the switch, I tested them with the voltage detector and I found that the black wire had voltage while the red did not. There were also a bunch of other wires (red, black, white and bare copper) coiled and covered with connectors. So not knowing what I was looking for, I went to sleep. It wasn't until I came back from work tonight and opened the other bedroom's switch box to see how the wires were connected that every thing became clear. After that it was a piece of cake.

I am so glad I found this website where it is possible to transform clueless people like me into miniprofessionals overnight. I am so greatful.
