Cold water leaks from the shower head. I took off the faucet and found that the valve (?) is almost flat against the wall. There is a hex shaped nut but I can't get a grip on it with pliers. There is a plastic trim around it so I can't use a wrench. What tool can I loosen it with so I can replace the washer.

You need to invest less than $10 in a plumber socket set available at any decent hardware store.

You might have luck with locking (e.g. Vise-Grip) pliers, and they'll be handy for many other jobs. But the sockets are better for this one task.
