we are trying to prepare a newly purchased house for hardwood installation. under the carpet we found particle board screwed, nailed, and glued to 1/4 plywood. We are now in the process of removing that. We have some spots of the particle board that because of the glue will not come up. Does anybody know of something that will dissove the glue to make removal easier?

thanks :)

If you are dealing with particleboard, it is not an acceptable subfloor for any type of hard surface floor covering. It is nothing but saw dust and glue and won't hold nails or cleats. It will have to be removed.

we are removing it. we have some spots that won't come up. very small sections where it was glued down. i've been soaking them with water which helps some -

is there something better to use?

Whats underneath the 1/4" plywood? I would lose that too and take it up since it is glued to the particle board. The 1/4" plywood is not your main subfloor and hopefully ;) it will not be glued down. If I am right you could cut thru both layers and take it up alot easier.

It would be worth checking out.

Ya, someone may have actually thought about it and was being smart when they installed the paticle board.

They may have put ¼" down, so come removal time, just get under the ¼" and pry up.

i think we are just going to lay new plywood over the existing. so removing the 1/4 plywood is not an option at this point. we're thinking plywood may be glued down as well. wouldn't suprise us if it was.
