How can I remove the smoke stain from a painted wood fireplace front and mantel without damaging the paint?

I know you wrote this a long time ago, but I have the same problem. I use 409 to wipe the soot from mantel, and then I do top it off with a fresh coat of paint. I repeat this process each spring before we put the fireplace to rest.
