I have a huge planting of red amaryllis. Not only do they need to be thinned out, I have a friend who wants some of them. How do I prepare them for shipping? Is it OK to ship them now? They are no longer blooming. I am not a green thumb!

Amaryllis is best lifted and divided in the fall after foliage dries up or is killed by frost. Most bulb companies don't ship amaryllis until October.

Lift clumps of bulbs carefully so you do not damage or bruise them. Try to get most of the roots that are attached to bulbs. Separate smaller bulbs from larger. Trim off any unhealthy parts. Gently wash with water hose. Bulbs will need to cure. Drying and curing temperatures should be 60 - 70 degrees in a dry, well-ventilated area out of sunlight and wind. When cured, place in paper bags with holes punched in them.
