I just bought a home with a very large and obtrusive brick two-sided(indoor/outdoor) fireplace. In an effort to minimize attention to it, I was thinking about covering the brick, the stack and hearth, with drywall and finishing it like the rest of the wall. Will this work, and if so, does anyone have any tips?

There is a good post regarding this very thing on the drywall home repair forum. Basically 1/4 inch drywall adhered with adhesive and a few screws (to GROSSLY oversimplify it). Check out that forum.

I'm hoping that you could provide a bit more information. I've serched for the previous posting you mentioned but could not locate it.

I have a brick fire place in a two-story family room that measures about 15 feet high and 4 feet wide. I specifically would like to know whether or not it is ok (meaning safe) to attach dry wall or plywood to a brick fireplace. And if so, could you tell me what type of fasteners could/should be used?

My main concern is that I use fasteners strong enough to support nearly a full sheet of drywall and I'm not sure if the fasteners should be placed in the mortar or in the brick themselves.

Thanks for any help you can provide. :)
