I have a 5 year old Frigidaire 5000 btu window ac unit that the compressor quit running on. I re-installed it this spring and it was running perfectly. Came home yesterday to find it blowing warm air. I can hear the thermostat click closed and open when the temp control is dialed up and down but the compressor is silent. No hum, buzz, room lights don't dim, nothing. The fan runs fine. Pulled the unit out and removed the cover. No burnt wiring, the thermal overload switch checked out OK, thermostat switch is clean and dry and wiring is tight. The first thing that came to mind was the capacitor. Could this be bad? How to check one of this and not get killed is the next question. How expensive to replace? oldmedic

It could be the cap,go to an appliance parts supply {with capacitor in hand} they should be able to test it & get you a new one.

Un-plug the a\c and then take the capacitor off (make sure to discharge it using insulated screwdriver, touch both legs at the sametime) and have someone check it for you to make sure that is your problem which is possible or just bring it to a parts house and buy a new one being they cost very little.
