Hi - has anyone ever found a way to clean the fluid that leaks from a portable radio battery off a Sisal carpet. My son's portable hi-fi had old batteries in it and when I moved it, the fluid leaked onto my newly fitted Sisal carpeting? Does anyone know how to clean it off? My husband's furious about it!!

You did not state what color the stain is.

I'd start with first neutralizing the battery acid by blotting with a solution of baking soda and water. If it foams when applied, that is good. Keep applying until any foaming stops.

I suspect you have some "rust" stains in the carpet, because the battery acid had corroded through the metal battery casing. After neutralizing the acid, try blotting the stain with Rust Away, Iron Out, or any commercial rust remover. Try to find a product that contains sodium or potassium hydrosulfite or bisulfite.

I would go with the suggested flushing the area with water. The rust away will help with any rust from the battery. But it is likely the acid from the battery has permanently damaged the carpet. Battery acid has a pH of below 1 which in most cases requires replacement. I would suggest wearing gloves during the cleaning as a low pH of that nature can also damage skin.

Many report that battery acid eats right through carpet. Nylon is severely damaged by strong acids such as battery acid and strong toilet bowl cleaners. Acid will degrade carpet fibers and dye. Carpet patch to repair may be necessary.
