Can you paint existing bathroom shower tiles?

I've seen more than my share of rental houses with painted tile so I know it "can be done". Just not something I would personally recommend/do since it looks terrible and will flake in due time since the paint really has nothing to hold onto.

with the TOP COAT.
I couldn't believe what I read....or maybe it was a mistake.
"Acrylic latex top coat" ?
NO, NO, NO....
definitely go with the more expensive 100% acrylic top coat...
sold only at fine paint stores like MAB, Sherwin-Williams, etc.
Much more durable....
latex and water = disaster.

Just don't paint the tile. Whatever cleaners you use will make the paint come off.

Despite recommendations to the contrary, coatings and paints over showers, tubs, and tile enclosures are not long-term durable options. These are subject to thermal shock, hard water minerals, cleaning products, use, and abuse. If tiles are in good shape and just not a color that you admire, it is possible to pull off a very effective color combination to make the older bathroom colors fit right in. You might want to search our decorating forum for similar problems or make a post there for advice on how to decorate around existing bathroom fixture colors without spending a bundle for replacements.
