Hello:
As I've posted before, I have had a new Vision Pro Model TH8320 U 1008 thermostat installed at my son's house. Since he's quite a distance away, I haven't had the opportunity to play with the stat with him in person, and try to figure out all the bells and whistles. He's totally non-technical.
He now also has a new Trane Series 80 forced hot air gas furnace, and an
existing older split A/C system.
The stat is configured to work both.
This is one of those "just trying to learn a bit more" type of questions.
Under the stat's "System" button, I now have Off, Heat and Cooling as options.
No "Auto" appears. I read in one of the owner manuals that I download for the series of Vision Pro that I think I have, that there is also an "Auto" choice that should appear.
I have no "Auto" icon choice appearing.
Should I have ? Is it an Installer option ?
If so, just for my info., what code number is it under to select it.
I'm pretty happy without it, as selecting heating for the winter, and cooling for the summer, certainly doesn't seem like a big chore.
But, I am very curious as to why I don't have it (under the "System" icon choices ), and, even more, what it does ?
Lets say you program the temp's for a particular day for wake-up to be, to make the numbers easy, 80 degrees (for the winter), and 70 degrees (for the summer).
And, the actual house temp. is 75 degrees at the wake up turn on time.
Not at all sure, but I'm assuming that under "Auto" the stat selects either heating or cooling.
Is this correct ?
O.K., then, so how does the stat to know whether to go for the 70 degrees via the A/C, or if it should go for the 80 degrees via some heat ?
[Remember, the actual house temp is 75, and the "System" menu
button is set for "Auto"]
I realize that I am missing a concept or something that is probably very simple, so I guess I should probably apologize for this dumb question beforehand. But, I'm really enjoying learning about this stuff (retired engr.)
Thanks again,
Bob

When you reach set up# 290, enter 2 to go futher into the set up.
then to #300 set to 1 for "Auto change over" 0 is off..
310 is the deadband.. it's defaulted at 3.
When you said 80 for heating, and 70 for cooling.. Did you mean 70 for heating and 80 for cooling?? The t-stat won't let you do the 80 heat, and 70 cool
So if deadband is left at 3 that means if you set your heat up to 75, the cool will be pushed up to 78. if you set your cool down to 75, the heat will be pushed down to 72
Coolng set at 80
Room at 75
Heating at 70
Nothing happens..
so if the room temp reaches the set point it will turn on that system to that temp setting.. Say room gets to 81 a/c comes on and it will run a/c. The room cools down to 69, the heat comes on.
There is never a dumb question, only way a person is going to learn is to ask questions. :-)
I used have it set onto "Auto" over the winter.. I set it to heat only in the spring cuz there are days that do warm up over 78, but no need of a/c.. No point of having the a/c running when I am not home and the windows are open.
What I did over the winter, when I had it set to "Auto", I turn off the breaker for the outdoor unit. When I get a house full of company and the house warms up, the furnace fan kicks in a higher speed to move the air around.. It was great around christmas when I had a house full of company where the basement was cooler and upstair was warmer, the fan helped balanced out the temp.
When the weather did warm up 2 weeks ago, I turned the breaker back on, and just left it in "off" till last week I needed the A/C. Only ran it 3 days so far.

As always, Glad to help you out.
For the fan program. i am sure you've read up about that??
I have my fan program to run the fan in "AUTO" during the day, and "CIRC" at night till am hours.
Why you ask? In the summer. it almost best to just let the fan cycle in cooling mode. A perfect example is in a car... When you run your car A/C in recirclate... Now when you turn offf the A/C and left the fan running.. The recirlculate air is pulling air from inside of the car that's cool.. soon as you shut off the compressor, the air warms up and gets really humid.
That what it be like when your A/C shuts off in the home.. so n point of keeping the fan running 24/7 in the a/c cycle. "CIRC" on the VisionPro cycles the fan on and off every now and then. I do it at nigh since the unit doesn't run that much.

Hi Jay:
Sounds like a real good idea on having the fan on Circulate.
Will try it out.
Thanks for thought,
Bob
