Ben,
You are trying to remove an organic stain/odor. Go to a Pet Store and get an enzyme cleaner for pet stains. Follow label directions and give it time to work. Followup by blotting the area with a weak solution of Dawn dish detergent in water.

Ben, I would first flush the carpet with clean cool water serveral times. To rid previous attempts. Be warned using the wrong chemical may of set the stain permanently. I would go with the suggested protein spotter...let it dwell 10-15 mins just do not let it dry. The cleaner needs the moisture for it to work. Afterwards rinse with cool water. You may just want to use the water vs the detergent to avoid residue. Repeated applications may be needed. Basicly until you clean the spot any agents used will only mask the odor.
As mentioned, before the spot may of been set by pervious attempts. Be careful with trying in the future as carpet can be delamanated easily which would require replacement.
Good luck

The liquid settled downward and outward 3-5 times the size of the affected area. Depending on amount of liquid, it could have settled into subfloor. Cleaning and deodorizing carpet with enzyme digester cleaner/deodorizer may not resolve the odor issue below the carpet.
When cleaning carpet, you do not want to oversaturate it. Carpet can be misted with deodorizer cleaner and left to set. The secret to using enzyme cleaners is to give the enzymes time to digest stains and odors. This may require keeping carpet damp (not saturated) with cleaner. Repeat application of cleaner may be necessary. Again, you will have no luck with padding beneath carpet. Oversaturation of carpet can cause delamination of backing and mold/mildew problems in padding.
Worst case scenario would be to have to pull carpet back, clean backing with deodorizer cleaner, and seal subfloor.
