I have a climbing rose bush of unknown variety. I was told to remove spent flowers by cutting just above the first 5-leaflet leaf. Is this true?

A more specific rendition would be to remove the spent blooms just above the foliage. Don't remove any foliage. New blooms are produced from the leaves immediately below the old flower clusters on climbing roses.
Hope this helps.

You do need to remove the spent flowers before they go to seed. Once the seed, the bush thinks it is done fo the season and will shut itself down.
Once fall gets here, stop removing the spent flowers. Let the bush go dormant naturally.
