Well, the previous owners of our home had a thing with cement slabs -- it's like an ocean of cement (no pond) in the back of our home. I'd like to take out most of it -- leave one or two for a patio. Contracts want an arm and a leg to smash and grab it. Is there a good way to do this myself -- other than sledge hammer a go go?

You can rent a pretty potent electric jackhammer from the tool rental shops. This will break up the concrete in short order. Next is hauling it somewhere.

How much material are you talking? I would dig a hole and bury it, but you might not be able to do that. As mentioned an electric jack hammer will break it up. Break it up into pieces that can be picked up by hand and hire some local kid with a truck to haul it off, prob wouldn't cost you much.
