Okay, I'll admit it-- I goofed.
When shopping for my tile supplies at the big orange box for my kitchen floor job , I grabbed that dasterdly tub of "pre-mixed thinset" . . . Funny too, because I knew that I should stay away from "mastic" being that this is a high-traffic area with the potential to get wet from time to time.
It gets worse . . . .
That goo is also what I used to secure the Wonderboard to the floor (my bad on that one-- says "no" right on the label). Hopefully, the fact that I peppered the wonderboard with screws in a pattern that would make even machine-gun kelley proud will mean that the floor has as little flex as possible . . .
So that's what's sitting under my 12x12 tile. The tile's been down about 4 days and I was going to grout tonight, but after reading some posts and seeing what a goof I made, I think I'll give it as much time as possible for the mastic-in-thinset's clothing to set up.
Will an extra couple of days make a difference? I'm having appliances delivered in 4 days and feel I should have the floor grouted before then, but I need some advice here.
When should I grout? Should I do anything in particular to mitigate my error? Unfortunately, pulling it all up and starting again is not an option because of both time and $$$.
On the bright side, at least I found this site before I made things worse by slapping in that pre-mixed grout that is now sitting in the return cart at the orange box store . . . .

Honestly, I would rip it up and scrape that crap off and redo it, you can probably save all the tile.:)
Or wait at least a week and grout it, then wait at least 72 hrs. till moving any heavy objects over it, keep your fingers crossed forever. :D
Cause the grout will probably start to crack and chip out within a year, maybe, then again it might last forever, then again, it might not, see what Im getting at?
After you throw it all out, save the nice bucket for mixing the Modified thinset, which is what should have been used.:)

Yep, I had a feeling that's what the answer would be . . . . every bone in my body is wanting to rip that stuff up and I know it's the right thing to do, but unfortunately we've got to move in on Wednesday . . . . the majority of the tile has been down since last Saturday, so it has had a little time to set up. I think I'll wait until the last possible moment to grout and then keep the fridge in the dining room for a few days . . . .
Hopefully, I'll get at least a few years out of the floor and by then the sting will wear off and I'll do this right. Thanks for the help on this as well as my other post-- I only wish I had found this site sooner . . .
