My central air stopped working today so my wife and child left me to stay with someone much cooler. anyway inside the home everything appears to be working fine with the exception of cool air from the vents. Outside it appears the unit is making noises but the fan won't work. I can get it started by giving it a little boost but it will stop again after a few minutes. Is it possible all i need is a new fan motor or could it be more involved. Thanks

Are the freon lines cold?
Is there condensate on either of the copper lines that go into the house?

Get a technician to come out and check the compressor as well as the fan that won't run. Sounds like a capacitor problem (either run or start).

The fan capacitor will cost about $10 bucks. Just replace it and see if that remidies your problem. Any motor shop or electrical supply house will have it.

**Make sure you pull the disconnect and short across the capacitor leads with an insulated screwdriver afterwards before removing it.**
